5 Minute Safety Meetings - June 19th - 23rd
Monday - Let's Talk about Safety
Each year, every day, on every shift we take our safety pledge:
“I pledge to personally be involved to create an injury-free work place. My dedication to creating a safe workplace free of all injuries will be absolute and clear through my actions.”
This week, in conjunction with the EnPro Safety Stand Down, let’s try something different and instead of an informational toolbox chat where someone talks and you listen – let’s really talk with each other about safety. Read these scenarios from Safety Toolbox Topics and then talk about what should have been done differently or not done at all to avoid these preventable injuries.
“Employee was riding a pallet on the forks of an industrial truck when his foot was caught between the pallet and stationary object. Employee died of a reported embolism at a medical facility.”
Tuesday
“On June 11, 2007, Employee #1 and a coworker were unloading material from the bed of a truck. As Employee #1 opened the passenger-side door of the truck….and equipment fell from the cab. Employee #1 attempted to intercept the roller by catching it with his right pinky finger. However, his right hand became caught between the back end of the truck and the roller, causing the amputation of his right pinky finger.”
“March 23, 2011, Worker was killed after a cigarette lighter used to check the level of a 55-gal. drum of flammable liquid ignited the liquid's vapor and exploded. Worker died from burns and blunt head trauma.”
Wednesday
“At about 2:30 p.m., Employee #1 was standing on a ladder cutting pipeline with an acetylene torch. Employee #1 was Vice President of the company which had been contracted to remove pipelines due to earthquake damage at the Northridge, CA, facility. Employee #1 had cut the #3 pipeline; when he cut the #2 pipe; residual petroleum distillate from the #3 pipe caught fire. Employee #1 sustained 2nd-degree burns on his face, arms, and stomach.”
“At approximately 11:00 a.m. on September 12, 2009, Employee #1 was cleaning a….concrete mixer with a coworker. The mixer was energized while Employee #1 was inside resulting in the amputation of his legs. Employee #1 was hospitalized.”
Thursday
“At approximately 10:00 a.m. on October 6, 2008, a coworker walking through the salvage yard observed the employee lying face up under a wrecked Chevy Blazer on a dry dirt surface with the vehicle resting squarely on the employee's left upper torso. The employee had not been seen in the morning and had arrived before the business opened to remove parts from the Blazer alone. There was no witness to the fall of the Blazer onto the employee. But the location of chest injuries suggested the employee was lying under the suspended automobile without the use of jack stands or supports. The wrecked vehicle was hoisted by the bumper. The bumper later broke loose from the vehicle. The wrecked vehicle then fell and crushed the employee. Paramedics were called to the scene by the employer. The employee was unresponsive and pronounced dead on the scene. The cause of death was blunt traumatic chest injuries and positional asphyxia.”
