Monday - Heart and Stroke
With Valentine’s day almost upon us, it is a reminder that February is Heart Health month. Let’s take a moment to talk about the causes of heart and stroke.
1) Physical Inactivity
2) Diet
3) Smoking
4) Over Weight
5) Family History
6) Stress
Some healthy tips to reducing your chances of disease:
1) Stop smoking: When you quit smoking it helps to create the good cholesterol in your system. It can also reduce other diseases such as cancer. You will also feel so much better.
2) Eat a balanced diet: eating better will not only lessen your chances but make you feel better. Just by eliminating your consumption of highly processed and fatty foods will help you with reducing the risks of disease but also with weight loss.
3) Get Active: Getting 60 mins of physical activity daily will not only give you more energy and but also help reduce risk.
4) Family History: Prevention, go see your family doctor if you have history in your family, being aware and making better choices will help you reducing your risks.
Tuesday - What is Cardiovascular Disease?
Cardiovascular disease is a common term used when describing disease of the heart and blood vessels. There are many types of disease that fall under this umbrella.
1) Coronary disease – This is the most common and is the disease of the arteries’ that supply the blood to the heart.
2) Heart Failure – This is when the heart is not pumping the blood properly to the rest of the body. This is caused by damage already done to the heart.
3) Peripheral vascular disease – this is the disease of the vessels that are far from the heart most commonly found in the legs.
4) Stroke – this happens when blood is restricted flow to the brain causing damage to the brain cells. The effects are determined by which part of your brain has been affected.
Wednesday - Signs of Heart Disease
1) Chest Pain – although we may associate chest pain with many different types of things going on in our bodies, we should never dismiss this pain. It is best to get it checked out as heart attacks are serious and life threatening if not treated.
2) Palpitations – these are irregular heartbeats. You usually become aware of these as you may feel like your heart is skipping a beat, or is slower normal speed and then suddenly it becomes rapid and then normal again. It may also beat for example every third beat very hard like its pounding against your chest. If any symptom is occurring like this you must go seek medical attention.
3) Light headed and dizziness- If you are having several occasions of feeling this way you must go to the doctor this can also be associated to something else other than heart disease.
4) Fainting and loss of consciousness – any loss of consciousness should be checked out with a Doctor.
5) Sleepiness during the day, fatigue and feeling lethargic – being tired and exhausted with a lack of motivation, craving sleep or falling asleep suddenly can be serious signs of heart disease and other issues and needs medical attention.
6) Shortness of breath – when experiencing this even if it may not be associated with the heart it may be asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, or pneumonia needs medical attention.
Thursday - Signs of Stroke
Any signs or symptoms that you feel you may be having a stroke, get medical attention immediately. Do not wait! There is so much that can be done if caught right away to reduce the affects of stroke. The signs of stroke are as follows:
1) Vision Loss
2) Weakness / Numbness
3) Confusion
4) Trouble Speaking or understanding speech
5) Balance / Vertigo / Dizziness
6) Pain or Pressure in your head and neck
7) Drooping of one side of your face / Loss of use to one side of your body
